How it started...
|
When our daughter was in second grade, I formed a book club for her and a few friends. They were all readers, and we promoted reading through the book club, but its real purpose was to train them to "discuss books as kids so they can discuss politics as adults." The number of book clubs grew to six as children and parents alike sought to participate.
My training and experience as an attorney served to craft the format of the book club. Every member shared their opinions at meetings. Every opinion was respected and heard. Every opinion was unique. Assumptions were drawn out and explored. Alternative interpretations were explained. Logic was spelled out linearly. Intelligent listening was implemented, modeled, and internalized. Citing sources and Amplification became habit. These students became models in class discussions, improving the learning of all students. Their reading comprehension soared and ability to think critically and empathize with others grew. Instilling adult skills in a child's social framework paid big dividends. Making book club meetings fun kept demand high while the children learned valuable adult communication skills. Adults benefit from the same training. Research shows that training adults in specific settings where they practice the implementation of skills results in their using them in their professional and personal lives outside of training. It also shows that when you improve the emotional intelligence of some of your workers, others who work with them also learn these skills. Give your teams and teens the gift of the ripple effect from Polite Argument* training. |
